Character History
Date: 2019-06-21 05:12 pm (UTC)After having been hired by Scrooge as both his accountant and security guard, Fenton had quite a few adventures, mostly in Duckburg but also the rare out-of-country experience. He (hopefully!) learned a good lesson after the whole "Pep fiasco" about not running headlong into hare-brained schemes, disregarding warnings, and letting his ego ever get that big again. His relationship with Gandra Dee had it's ups-and-downs. Fenton showered Gandra with grand gestures of affection and over-the-top gifts, as it was the only way he knew how to get attention in the past... but to Gandra it felt as if he were smothering her. A robot of Gyro's that became obsessed with Gizmoduck showed how it felt to be on the other side of such intense affections, and Fenton has since tried to dial things back from then on. He slips up every now and again, but he has gotten better.
In trying to deal with a swarm of metal-eating metal mites, the "Mark 1" Gizmoduck suit was destroyed. I headcanon this as the 'official' last appearance of Gizmoduck in the Ducktales series (there was 1 more episode with the Gizmosuit produced/shown after this, but the actual timeline of events is never clear, so I feel 'Metal Mites' can easily be the last episode where the Gizmosuit is shown). Fenton was still able to use his wits in order to defeat the metal mites, but Gyro had to build a brand new Gizmosuit. This would be what I call the "Mark 2" suit, that appears in the Darkwing Duck episodes. It's slightly smaller in height than the Mark 1 suit, with the most distinctive difference being the white upper arms (shown in Darkwing Duck), as opposed to the black upper arms (shown in Ducktales).
As Gizmoduck, Fenton was initially unsure about Darkwing Duck. He felt Darkwing was a vigilante, acting above and beyond the law, and didn't quite trust him. The two got off to a rocky start, thanks to a set-up by Steelbeak, but after working together to stop him from stealing a prototype jet from the army, Gizmoduck's opinion of Darkwing Duck improved. (Darkwing in turn was not quite as impressed or friendly towards Giz still.) When Negaduck joined up with Megavolt, Quackerjack, Bushroot and the Liquidator to form the super-villain team The Fearsome Five, and took over the city of Saint Canard, Gizmoduck joined (a reluctant) Darkwing Duck, Morgana, Neptunia, and Stegmutt to form the super-hero team the Justice Ducks (even if two aren't ducks), in order to fight back. The Justice Ducks were eventually successful, freeing the city from the Fearsome Five's hold.

♦♦ TEXT REVIEWS ♦♦ If you DON'T want to go watching however-many-hours-of-TV... (or risk going to the site below, though it's never pinged my anti-virus... small reassurance, yeah ¬_¬) here are text-reviews of every Ducktales episode, found on this blog HERE. Scroll down to about the middle of the page to find the links to the reviews of the episodes I've named below.
Specific Episode links: Please note that I am NOT linking to any official site (I do not have Netflix or the like). I am linking to videos on the site kimcartoon.to - a very image + ad-heavy site. Ad-blockers HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... (there are a TON of these "don't get caught playing this game!!!" type ads there... but this is the only place I've found that I can watch the episodes...) I don't LIKE linking to places where I feel as if I have to say 'beware', but... ...beware...
● Fenton's introductory mini-series:
─ Super Ducktales part 1 - Liquid Assets
─ Super Ducktales part 2 - Frozen Assets
─ Super Ducktales part 3 - Full Metal Duck
─ Super Ducktales part 4 - The Billionare Beagle Boys Club
─ Super Ducktales part 5 - Money to Burn
● other episodes of note:
─ My Mother the Psychic - exploring Fenton's relationship with his M'ma.
─ Metal Attraction - exploring Fenton's relationship with Gandra Dee.
─ The Big Flub - Fenton at his absolute WORST.
─ A Case of Mistaken Secret Identity - in which Launchpad is accidentally pegged as being Gizmoduck.
─ The Duck Who Knew Too Much - more of Fenton + Gandra, plus more hare-brained schemes from Fenton.
─ Tiff of the Titans - crossover with Darkwing Duck. The two's first face-to-face meeting. (does NOT go too well initially.)
─ Just Us Justice Ducks part 1 and Just Us Justice Ducks part 2 - crossover with Darkwing Duck. A superhero team is formed.
(Can we please just pretend that the Darkwing Duck episode "Up, Up and Awry" doesn't exist? Note: not intending to yell, just want to emphasize: THIS IS JUST MY PERSONAL OPTION, YOU DON'T HAVE TO AGREE WITH ME. I'm not too fond of it, I don't think Giz is completely in-character in it (how is he flying without his helmet-copter, or evidence of a jet-pack, and the constant use of "super-powered super-hero" was just... grating to me. c.c;). There are plot holes, head-scratchers and such in the other Ducktales episodes, ESPECIALLY towards the end of the series, but... I'm not fond of this one. .... DID have great expressions for screencaps, though. XD)
Character Motivation, Personality, Strengths & Weaknesses
Date: 2019-06-21 05:13 pm (UTC)In his own words, he wants "status, recognition, a boss who remembers my name". He's looking for success, but has no idea what that means for him, personally. So he tends to go after anything he thinks will advance his career, or raise himself up in the eyes of others. He wants to be respected and looked highly upon for what he does. Again, in his own words, he wants "more" out of life, whatever that happens to be.
Personality:
● "See Mama? I'm more than just Fenton Crackshell. I'm SOMEBODY." - Fenton, referring to being Gizmoduck, "Full Metal Duck".
─ Fenton has been treated as a 'nobody' his whole life, by almost everyone in his life (his previous boss and his own mother, for example). This has given him a bit of an inferiority complex and fuels his desire to be seen as a "somebody". Things changed once he was hired by Scrooge McDuck, and though he's gained a sense of self-worth and confidence, it's still NEW, and can be easily shaken.
─ Fenton's M'ma was quite uninterested in her own son, only caring about her television shows... until Fenton finally stood up to her, bolstered by his recent feelings of self-worth after the end of the "Super Ducktales" special. She still loves her TV, but her relationship with Fenton has greatly improved since then (and his relationship with her), and she is much more open about her motherly attention and care towards her son.
─ Fenton is ambitious, makes decision hastily, and looks at the 'big picture', not too concerned with details. This has the tendency to get him into QUITE a bit of trouble.
● Delving into slightly headcanon territory, we don't have any reference to his father except for one throw-away line in "Full Metal Duck". It's not hard to imagine that Fenton grew up with no father figure, and (until the show started), a couch-potato, uninterested-in-anything-other-than-her-TV, unimpressed mother. I feel that this is why he's desperate for attention and affection, and can act clingy when shown that. This is also why he acts with such grand gestures of affention towards Gandra: it took a lot of effort and large displays to get even the smallest sort of reaction from his M'ma as he was growing up, so he feels this is what's needed in any interaction.
● Fenton lacks a formal education. He probably quit school early to get jobs to earn money to support M'ma + himself.
─ perhaps due to his lack of education, he tends to take things literally. For example, when Scrooge mentioned he wanted to keep his assets 'liquid', Fenton thought that meant dumping his money into a lake.
─ Despite this, can be quick to come up with plans and ideas, even if they don't always work out the way he intends them to. If pressured, can think on his feet, come at problems from new angles. He will also doggedly persist against any sort of obstacle or problem until he manages to overcome/fix it.
● Despite the shows of bravado he puts on, he can become extremely self-conscious. His bluster and headstrong determination is a cover for his insecurity over his own skills and abilities.
─ he's become very reliant on the Gizmo suit, and feels very vulnerable, weak, and useless without it. Sometimes he can feel that all that makes him worthy is Gizmoduck, and without it he's just a "simple accountant", not worth much.
─ he definitely feels that being Gizmoduck is the best part about himself. The suit allows him to be a hero, to be popular, and respected by everyone.
─ his confidence gets a huge boost whenever he's in the suit. He's more sure of himself, and his actions, while being Gizmoduck.
● The only people who know that Fenton is Gizmoduck are his M'ma, and Scrooge. There have been moments (especially in later episodes) where one wonders HOW others never clued in to the fact that Fenton was Gizmoduck... or that the writers just seemed to be unaware that it was supposed to be a secret identity. In some episodes you really had to maintain a suspension of disbelief, and accept that some characters were just OBLIVIOUS, in order to keep the whole secret identity thing intact.
Canon Strengths/Weaknesses:
● Strengths:
Fenton has one unique skill, (which is (part of) the reason why he was hired by Scrooge McDuck). He has the ability to count anything, at just a glance, in a matter of seconds. His counts are always accurate, too. If he does happen to be off by a penny for example, it's only because said penny was out of his line of sight. The size or amount of the item he's counting doesn't matter. It can be only a handful of change, or the entire contents of Scrooge's money bin; Fenton can count all of it.
Headcanon: in lieu of his lack of education, Scrooge has taught Fenton how to actually do real accounting, on-the-job. It's still a bit of a work-in-progress...
─ Determination: If there's something he wants, he will doggedly go after it, until he either gets it, or is convinced otherwise. This will cause trouble, but when that happens, he is also determined to put things right, and will keep trying until he succeeds.
─ Friendly: Fenton may be a bit (okay, fairly) self-centered at times, but it's never maliciously intended. He does care about other people, and is generally a cheerful, friendly person.
─ Heroic: Being a hero in the guise of Gizmoduck is a given, but Fenton himself has shown plenty of heroic moments, too. He beat the alien supercomputer MEL with his wits, and rescued Launchpad from drowning. He might not think much of Fenton Crackshell, himself, being a hero... but he definitely has that potential within him.
● Weaknesses:
─ Stubborness, impulsivity, & lack of forethought:
"Determination" can be a double-edged sword... for as much as Fenton is stronger for having it, it also leads to a lot of problems. As the flip-side of determination can lead to these three traits.
When Fenton gets one of his hare-brained ideas, it's hard to sway him from the path of destruction he's started down until it's too late. For example, he ignored Gyro's warning that the "Pep" bubble gum wasn't fully tested and went ahead with marketing it. That led to people floating helplessly in the sky, whom he had to rescue as Gizmoduck, as well as a massive recall of the product and full-refunds to everyone that bought it.
─ Lack of education/literal minded/naiveté:
Fenton can be smart in some ways... but in other ways he can be really dumb. He can be easily duped, but more often it's his own ignorance working against him. There was the whole incident with the 'liquid assets', and thinking 'frozen assets' meant freezing the lake. The Beagle Boys were also able to dupe him into using termites to eat away at the dam holding back Scrooge's fortune in the whole lake business.
─ Lack of Confidence in himself:
Outside of the Gizmosuit, Fenton can be very nervous about his own self-worth. He fears being replaced, being useless, or fired. For example, when Scrooge was suffering from anxiety about people constantly wanting his money, they went to the land of Tra-la-la, a land without money. There, Fenton feared that without the need for money his usefulness as an accountant would be redundant and he'd be fired. An offhand comment he made about the rarity of bottlecaps (from Scrooge's medicine) making it valuable, snowballed into the exact situation Scrooge was trying to avoid. Fenton hadn't intended for it to happen, but it was his fears at being redundant that had him poking at the seams of the Tra-la-la society, skeptical that they were as altruistic as they seemed. And that, coupled with his comments about the bottlecaps did not help matters at all.
When he feels useless, when situations like this arise, or if the Gizmoduck suit is incapacitated in any way, Fenton is prone to moping and wallowing in his own misery, often melodramatically, before he's able to pick himself back up and deal with whatever problem (usually self-caused) he's dealing with.

Date: 2019-06-21 05:14 pm (UTC)Class: Fenton has been sorted into the "Fairy" class. (Much to his chagrin; he wishes he was in the Hero class. He could work as a hero/warrior class as Gizmoduck. Maybe later, as a secondary...)
Because, "boy howdy"... does Fenton ever wear his heart on his sleeve. He is passionate and excitable, and it's really easy to tell what he's feeling at any given time. He can be incredibly stubborn, charging on ahead with any given bad idea, not heeding warnings until it's too late. He'll be just as stubborn and determined in making things right, though, too. And there have been moments ("The Big Flub", anyone?) where his pride and arrogance dominate his ego. At least until he's been served a good, healthy helping of humble pie. His desire for success and acceptance does trend towards a self-centered attitude at times, too. Can be obsessed with improving his station in life/being seen as a 'someone'/gaining acknowledgement from others.
Weapon: N/A
Magic Style: N/A
Element: ● (Fairy) ● Energy: Fenton is definitely full of energy. When he's got his sights set on some goal, he charges after it, full-tilt, firing on all four cylinders, etc. He's excitable and rather high-strung. He gets excited about things very easily, bouncing up and down, unable to stay still. When he gets an idea, he's running full-throttle into making that idea work (good or bad). When he messes things up, he'll still go all-out, in almost manic desperation to make things right. Energy would suit Fenton as well because of his Gizmosuit literally needing "energy" to work.

[Fenton's holding his 3M up, and is pointing over his shoulder with his thumb to something behind him. It's a gigantic... goose... pecking away at one of the glass-covered popcorn carts, trying to get at the food inside.]
Ahhh... is anyone else seeing this? Is this a corrupted monster or something normal, here? [He had no idea.] Should we be doing anything about this?
[The goose then notices Fenton and turns towards him, stretching out it's wings and honking angrily. Then it starts to give chase. There's a second of Fenton's scared face, before the video becomes a blur as he clutches the 3M in hand as he runs away from the angry bird. Nothing can really be seen and all that can be heard is honking and Fenton's yelping.]
Noooo... good goosey! Bad goosey! Leave me alone! I'm not bird food! Heeeeeeelp!
